What is a COSS Family Nature Club?

A family nature club is a group of adults and children who enjoy nature together on a regular basis.

Family nature clubs are made up of people who want to teach their children life skills, creativity, problem-solving and confidence. Members of a family nature club may live in the same street, have children at the same school or play the same sports.

Family nature clubs are not new – of course, families have been getting out like this and having fun together for a number of years in Australia.

Your family nature club is your own - you decide where you go, when, how often and who you go with. We can provide you with some information on how to get started and some ideas for activities, but you will soon discover the places you want to go and the activities you enjoy.

What are the benefits for my family?

Children who experience high levels of contact with nature are reported to have higher levels of
self-worth and higher cognitive function. Getting out in nature is good for everyone. It doesn’t matter whether you take a gentle stroll along a path, do a little bird watching or go camping - being in nature gives us a break and refreshes our minds and bodies.

How do I get started?

COSS family nature clubs are your clubs. Gosford City Council will provide a free COSS Family Nature Club guide which includes information and some activities that your family may enjoy, but your club is your own to manage.

You can decide where to go adventuring, as well as when, and with whom. You don't need to be an expert or know all of the plants and animals. In fact, many people prefer to learn together rather than be told by an expert!

The COSS Family Nature Club guide has plenty of tips on how to send out invitations for your club, and how to plan your outings for fun, hassle-free trips.

If you’d like a copy of the COSS Family Nature Club guide, please either:

  1. Send us an email with your name and postal address to familynatureclub@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au and we will post out a short survey for you to complete. Once we’ve received your completed survey, we’ll send you a copy of the guide;
  2. Phone our council’s Customer Service team on 4325 8222 and request that a COSS Family Nature Club survey be posted out to you. We will then post out your guide when we receive your completed survey; or
  3. Visit any council Customer Service counter to fill in your survey and collect your guide.

Please note

The family nature club program is an approach Gosford City Council wishes to encourage.

The inherent risk in outdoor physical activities should be considered when organising, planning and participating in nature activity programs.

Gosford City Council, whilst supporting and encouraging this program, does not accept any liability associated with injuries, accidents or loss/damage to property associated with members' participation.

Where can we go?

The Wildwalks website gives information on tracks, trails and camping areas in New South Wales.

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service also has a Guide to National Parks in NSW.

Tell us about your Family Nature Club

Send us a story or pictures of your family nature club for a chance to win COSS t-shirts for your club. We'd love to hear your stories and share them with other families – you can tell us about your adventures, your favourite places, or the things you like to do out in nature.

Please note:  So that they can be shared with other family nature clubs, we often upload appropriate photos that are sent in to our website.

If you’d like to send us photos that have people in them, you will need to ask those people to fill out and return a Photo Release Form. You can send the form to us By Email or via post to:
