Seniors at 50 Plus Leisure and Lifestyle Centre

Grandma Moses Art Competition & Exhibition 35th Anniversary

In 2017 the Gosford 50+ Leisure & Learning Centre celebrated 35 years of running the Grandma Moses Art Competition & Exhibition. To commemorate the milestone a 35th Anniversary video was produced and launched at the 2018 Seniors Festival Grandma Moses Selected Artist Exhibition held on 6 April 2018 at the Erina Centre, Erina. The video captures the essence and history of the event through stories from all those who have been involved, both past and present.

The annual competition is named after American Artist Anna Mary Moses, affectionately known as “Grandma Moses’ who took up painting as a career at the age of 78. She held her first ‘one woman show’ at the age of 80, and painted more than 1,500 pictures in the last 23 years of her life; creating artworks until her death at age 101.

Entrants are asked to submit their artwork into one of five prize sections – Open, Watercolour, Novice, 50+ Centre/Senior Centre Art Group Member and Central Coast Inspired. Entries open in July with the Competition and Exhibition held in the second week of September.

GOALL – Growing Older And Loving Life!

In partnership with local community organisations, Council delivers a seasonal magazine called GOALL. The magazine is aimed at celebrating the contribution our local seniors make to the community and their families while also being informative. Based on the six strategic priorities of Central Coast Council’s Positive Ageing Strategy, the magazine is broken into sections which provide stories and information on Staying Healthy, Being Involved, Getting Around, My Community, My Home, and Transition and Support.

GOALL is always looking for story ideas and activities of interest to our readers. If you have any suggestions, stories, ideas or would like to contribute please contact Team Leader Senior Services, Melissa Metcalfe, on 4304 7065 or email Melissa.Metcalfe@centralcoast.nsw.gov.au.

Senior Services

There are a range of services and initiatives designed to encourage older residents to have an active lifestyle and improve their health and wellbeing in the Central Coast region.

Central Coast Council follows the NSW Health Ageing Framework and its six key areas for action:

  1. Attitudes to ageing and older people;
  2. Participation in community life;
  3. Making your own decisions;
  4. Supportive neighbourhoods and communities;
  5. Health, accommodation, care and support; and
  6. Making the best use of resources.

In addition, the Central Coast Council has a Positive Ageing Strategy which aims to support older residents to lead healthy, active and independent lives as they age, enhancing participation and quality of life. The Positive Ageing Strategy is made up of six key strategic priorities:

  1. Staying Health - Older residents have opportunities to engage in and maintain a healthy lifestyle and access to quality and affordable health services.
  2. Being Involved -Older residents have opportunities to actively participate in community life and feel valued for their contribution.
  3. Getting Around - Older residents can move easily and safety around the community.
  4. My Community - Spaces and places within our community are age-friendly and support active ageing.
  5. My Home - Older residents have access to housing which enables them to age in place and are well informed of housing options available to them as needs and/or circumstances change.
