Regional transport

Over the next decade, there will be a considerable increase in Gosford City’s population. With more people set to call Gosford City home, there will be a huge demand on the transport system - not only to move people around the local area, but also for trips to the wider Hunter and Sydney regions.

Our key priorities:

  • Development of the M9 to link the M1 enabling greater links to the wider Sydney region;
  • Further investment into public transport to provide further accessibility and foster greater connectivity between town centres;
  • Increased and more efficient rail services and high
    speed rail; and
  • Fast ferry connecting the Central Coast and Sydney.

High speed rail project  

As outlined in the High Speed Rail Study carried out by the Federal Government, the Newcastle to Sydney rail corridor is one of the most heavily utilised in Australia outside urban areas. It caters for a range of freight and passenger services, including;

  1. Regional passengers
  2. Newcastle to Sydney inter-city
  3. CountryLink interstate
  4. Bulk freight

The corridor is a principal freight route in the national network, carrying interstate traffic to and from Brisbane and intrastate traffic to and from the northwest NSW. The corridor carries freight and passenger trains that share the same railway line in sections.  

The High Speed Rail (HSR) Stage 1 study states the “existing rail corridor is approaching maximum capacity utilisation in a number of locations, constraining future freight and passenger growth”. 

Currently, there are over 38 long distance passenger trains and 14 freight trains in each direction on the route per day. 

Following our lobbying of the previous government, we have been writing to our current local State and Federal members to seek their support for a high speed rail project. We have requested the expedition of the Sydney-Newcastle link as the first stage in this project, given the high level of congestion on these road and rail lines.

The Phase 2 Study proposed a preferred alignment through the Central Coast with a HSR station at Ourimbah.
